For me it’s all about story telling through classical music, and especially through the guitar music of Spain.
I don't do this for a living, though I've loved music for as long as I can remember. I signed up for drums in elementary school and was given a 9-inch drum pad and a pair of sticks - not exactly an inspiring musical experience! Fortunately, I had a really cool middle school band teacher who offered to teach me electric bass when I was 12. I absolutely loved it and took private lessons for bass and started teaching myself acoustic guitar in parallel. I was introduced to classical music in a high school music theory class and began taking private lessons for classical piano. A couple of classmates played classical guitar and gave me sheet music for Asturias by Albeniz (thankfully no one told me that it was too advanced), music by Bach, and others, and I learned them on guitar. I studied for advanced placement in music and then started college with a major in music theory and composition. I also went to a trade school with my best friend for audio and video engineering. I left college before graduating and spent a few years pursuing a career as a recording engineer but discovered it wasn’t a happy life for me. I pretty much stopped playing music entirely and returned to school to pursue degrees in math and electrical engineering, and a happy career in research.
A few years ago, my wonderful wife Marilyn encouraged me to take up music again and now I do it purely for fun. My passion is arranging and performing late 19th century romantic music for the guitar. The reward for me is connecting with people emotionally through music, either by playing for them or through my recordings and videos. Sometimes it's about making someone feel energized with fiery, flamenco-inspired pieces. Other times it's about communicating calmness and beauty, or joy. Nothing makes me happier than having someone say what they heard is beautiful, or if someone sheds a tear while listening. I hope you enjoy my work. Thanks for reading.
